The opening prompt

Make an arcade game called Crazy Coco about a small girl spaniel with chestnut-orange ears, a white stripe down her forehead, a white muzzle and chest, big dark eyes, a black nose and a hot pink collar with a bone-shaped tag. Coco goes completely crazy in a fenced garden seen from above. She runs toward wherever the player drags a finger or holds the pointer (arrow keys and WASD also work), with momentum so she skids and drifts round corners, her ears flapping harder the faster she goes. Treats appear on the lawn: bone treats, sausages worth more, and tennis balls. Grabbing treats quickly in a chain builds a score multiplier and fills a Crazy meter. A full meter starts Crazy Mode for eight seconds: she runs faster, glows, sucks in nearby treats and is not hurt by anything. Hazards: a robot vacuum that patrols and slowly hunts her, sprinkler jets that flash a warning before they fire, and a cat that dashes across after a warning mark. Three lives shown as paw prints. It gets busier over time. Save the best score. Short, funny messages when things happen.

Revision after the first version was judged an awful likeness: stop drawing Coco as a cartoon and use cut-outs of her real photo instead, with a drawn cartoon body, a sticker outline and drawn effects on top: dizzy spiral eyes when she is hit, sunglasses in Crazy Mode, a tongue when she is fast.

What we learned

  • The first version drew Coco as a cartoon, and her owner said it looked nothing like her. Version two uses a cut-out of her real photo with the effects drawn on top.
  • A cut-out photo makes a far better character than a generated drawing when the point is a likeness.

Game controls

  • Drag or hold your finger where you want Coco to run
  • Arrow keys or WASD on a keyboard
  • Fill the Crazy meter to trigger Crazy Mode
